Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In creating social and women-centric novels, the author is often still considered the sole creator of their work, defining the functions of its characters. However, an examination of contemporary Persian novels reveals this view to be exaggerated; authors are not the sole determining factor. They are influenced by numerous factors in creating their work—for instance, the impact of the author"s gender on the creation of female characters is undeniable. The ideology/discourse in which the author operates also plays a decisive role in shaping the literary work, to the extent that it can be argued that these ideologies/discourses create the characters and determine their functions.
METHODOLOGY: This descriptive-analytical study extracts the functions of the central female character in two novels, Dokhtar-e-Ra"iyat (The Peasant"s Daughter) by E"temadzadeh and Del-Foulad (Steel Heart) by Ravanipour. The data are then analyzed comparatively based on the author"s gender and their associated ideology/discourse.
FINDINGS: The analysis of traditional, emotional, and social functions of the female characters confirms their link to each author"s ideology/discourse. Furthermore, the author"s gender significantly determines these functions. Ravanipour, influenced by feminist discourse (especially radical feminism), and utilizing her female subjectivity and direct knowledge of women"s social actions, presents a multi-layered and dynamic female character. Conversely, E"temadzadeh, due to his adherence to class-based ideology (Marxism-Leninism) and lack of direct experience with women"s internal world, predominantly portrays women within the class system and feudal lord-peasant relations.
CONCLUSION: E"temadzadeh in Dokhtar-e-Ra"iyat is less successful in showcasing the full dimensions of female character and expanding her diverse functions. In contrast, Ravanipour offers a multi-layered, dynamic, and more realistic portrayal, making the character functions in Del-Foulad more varied, in-depth, and narratively independent. This demonstrates that female authors are often capable of presenting a more complete and realistic image of women"s lives, emotions, and capabilities.
